Day one of We Do Lego Lab.

September 5, 2023

This is a test of the National Classroom Association. I am trying to write my very first blog.... let's see how this adventure goes.

My Learning Journey-

Today my lab partner Alex and I were discovering how to create a robot and teach it to play a sound to a certain letter similar to Morris's code.

Alex and I chose to build a Moris code bot called "Sending Messages" using a "We do 2.0 Lego box". This is the first time I have ever done anything like this as far as coding the bot to perform a certain action. Here is the link to the step-by-step instructions that we used to build the bot.

our finished bot looks like this

After we followed the given building instructions, my partner and I had to download the Lego app to our computer. This app is what we used to Bluetooth the bot and computer together so that they can communicate. Once the app was downloaded, we were able to start building "code" and create a line of communication with the bot.

During this step we put a series of instructional information together to instructions like " I will move the joystick to the right twice" and then this will correlate with an assigned sound that was also linked to a letter in the alphabet. Therefore, allowing one to create Morris's code messages.  We still have some learning to do and work on fully figuring out the code configurations, but we are well on our way.

Thoughts-

This was really fun! It was exciting (like a child getting to eat a candy bar) when our bot made its first sounds. It was an OHHH!! giddy moment.

Standards/learning concepts-

ISTE Standard: The standard link is here

Standards used:

During this lesson, my partner and I used the following standards in class. Together we set professional learning goals for our project and strategized how to complete the task at hand in a timely manner(5.1a). Secondly, we were able to use perseverance during the discovery of building this new bot project. When we came across a task that we were unsure of instead of giving up we pushed through and kept trying until we were able to figure out the frustrating task. This created an opportunity to learn and become innovative in our line of thinking and execution(5.1.d).

5.1.a   Set professional learning goals to explore and apply teaching strategies for integrating CT practices into learning activities in ways that enhance student learning of both the academic discipline and CS concepts.

5.1.d   Develop resilience and perseverance when approaching CS and CT learning experiences, build comfort with ambiguity and open-ended problems, and see failure as an opportunity to learn and innovate.
